About Ms. Barley's Costume

Dress—In The Sierra Chronicles book two, Hope’s Promise, Jess finds herself amidst an altercation on the street, and her dress is ruined. Friend and clothier, Augusta Scott, “Gusty,” provides the blue calico dress with tiny red roses. Months later, Jake commissions an artist to paint her portrait, and, since the dress has become Jake’s favorite, she wears it for the portrait.

Belt—Jake cut the strips of leather himself and braided it for his lady—a style one might expect from the hands of a cattleman, but can you guess where he found the buckle?

Hoops—The six-hoop crinoline, which measures almost a whopping five feet in diameter at the bottom, explains the need for the wide doorways of the era, and the reason why many fainting couches had no arms—one must appear modest and elegant if one is to faint properly.

Red and green underskirts—Too practical to purchase expensive new underskirts when she needs them, Jess sewed these from spare fabric in Hope's Promise. Always delighted to sidestep convention, Jess secretly enjoys the festive colors no one except her sees.

Moccasins—In Love’s Rescue, Jess’s Paiute friend gave her deer hide moccasins, and Jess wore them everywhere. They’re far more comfy than ladies’ button-up shoes, and, of course, much better suited to the ranch.

Hairstyle—In Love’s Rescue, Jess dresses for a ball which, due to a sad twist of fate, she will not attend. This is the style in which she wore her hair for that ball.

Earrings—In The Sierra Chronicles book three, Faith’s Reward, an immigrant with little to his name asks Jake to trade these earrings for a horse. The man had intended to give the earrings to his wife once they arrived in California to welcome her to their new life, but his wife did not survive the journey. The man told Jake he wanted Jake’s missus to have them.

About the Photo Page, Below

When asked in a recent interview, “Which character in your novel most interested you while you wrote? Why?” Ms. Barley replied:

“Surprisingly, the heroine’s older brother, Ambrose. I chose most of my male character descriptions, and partly their personalities, based on actual black-and-white Civil War photographs of men who fought, some who died, in the Civil War. A photo of one soldier, Isaac I. Stevens (top photo below), gripped me in a Somewhere in Time way that I just couldn’t get out of my head. Sadly, the man died at Chantilly on September 1, 1862. He was only forty-four, and this photo reveals directness and intensity in his face that tell me he was prepared to fight for what was right, no matter what it cost him. By his expression, he may have sensed it would cost his life. He’s someone I would like to have known, and he’s someone whose life and sacrifice can now be remembered 150 years after he died, since through this novel his memory lives on. So I loved making this man into Ambrose. I loved thinking of Ambrose as my own brother. That made writing his scenes and his character real to me. Ambrose’s character has touched others as well; a number of readers have asked if I will be writing his story. I may. What I know for certain is, by writing these men as fictional characters, they live on.”
